Choosing Golf Clubs for Kids
62
If your kids love playing golf as much as you do, you'll want to get them a special set of golf clubs so that they will be able to develop their skills and reach their full potential. You certainly don't want them to try and use your own clubs, as they will be too long and your child will quickly develop improper form as a result. These days it is not hard to find special golf clubs which have been designed for the needs of smaller kids, so if your child has shown an interest in golf it's a good idea to foster their talent by getting them the tools they need to improve their game.
In order to choose the perfect golf clubs for your kids, you have to look at several factors first. It is a good idea to bring your kids along while buying the clubs so that they will be able to try them out in the store. It will save you a trip in returning or exchanging the items if they turn out to be not quite right for your child.
Finding the Right Clubs
The first factor that you have to consider is the length of the club. Your child should normally be choking down on the club about 1-2 inches. If they have to choke more than that then it means the club is too long for him or her. If your child can make a nice, smooth swing while choking up 1-2 inches then the club is the right length. The next thing to consider is the shaft flex. Since a child tends to have a slower swing speed than adults, they will generally need to find a club with the proper flex. This will help them get good elevation with their shots, even with slower speeds.
You also have to consider the weight of the golf club. Golf clubs for kids are created in a way that kids will be able to comfortably swing the club. If you let your child use an adult club, he or she will have a hard time developing proper form. You'll also want to consider the club's grip size. If you are going to buy your kids their own set of golf clubs, make sure that the grip will fit them perfectly so that they will not have stiff fingers after the game. Most kids' clubs will have a narrower core, making them easier for kids to hold.
If your child is just learning to play the game, make sure the irons are hybrids and not standard irons. A hybrid golf club can be used in place of the irons and woods, and will be much easier for the child to use. They can always switch over to standard irons later if they so choose, but when you're first starting out it's more important to work on the basics and prevent frustration from setting in.
Golf can be tremendous fun for both young and old, but if you want to get your kids started out right it's a good idea to get them their own set of clubs. Some parents worry that they'll need to buy their kids new clubs every single year as they grow. If this is a concern there's nothing wrong with shopping around for secondhand clubs and then selling your child's old set when you find a larger set for them to use. Just be sure that the new clubs will fit your child properly and will be something he or she will be excited to use.
